This was one of the first recipes that I made for our dogs. We call it "Puppy Casserole" because it was for the puppies. This is a very simple recipe.
2 cups of cooked meat. I used deboned chicken in this one.
1/2 cup of sweet potatoes.
1/4 cup of green beans
1/4 cup of peas.
Mash the sweet potatoes and stir in the meat. Then fold in green bean & peas.
Sometimes, I add other things, such as dried cranberries, chopped celery, or other dog safe fruit or vegetable. I do reduce the other vegetables if I add something else to keep the same meat ratio in comparison to the other ingredients.
Our dogs are seniors and I have been making this since they were puppies. A very long time ago, our thirteen year old nephew came over after I made this. I had been in the process of filling the bowls for the puppies, but had only done one when the doorbell rang.
I placed the bowl on the table to answer the door. I invited our nephew into the house. He sat at the table and I went into the kitchen to get him something to drink.
The dogs ran into the kitchen whining and barking. I could tell they were upset so I followed them out of the room. They ran over to the dining room table and whined louder. My nephew had started to eat the Puppy Casserole upsetting our dogs immensely.
I explained to my nephew that he was eating the puppies' food. He paused for a minute to ask me what was in it, told me it was good, and continued to eat. I filled two more bowls for the dogs and then they were happy again.
My nephew still asks me to make the Puppy Casserole because it is one of his favorites. My husband likes it, too.
